Himachal Pradesh Weather Update: The southwest monsoon brought devastation to the hill state of Himachal Pradesh 37 years 37, as people have died due to rain-related incidents, and the death toll is likely to rise further as the search operation continues. The state is unlikely to receive any relief from adverse weather in the coming few days as IMD has forecasted continued heavy rains.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued its latest update, warning that continued heavy rains are likely to affect the state until July 7.
As the rain fury continues in the state, the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority has assessed the loss of properties to be over Rs 400 crore. The HPSDMA has said that the death count is likely to rise.
Among all districts, Mandi has been the worst-hit. In Mandi, Thunag subdivision is most affected, with roads and other essential services like electricity, water supply severely disrupted. 40 people are still missing in Mandi. Relief camps have been set up and the food packets were air-dropped by the Indian Air Force in the affected areas.
On Wednesday, Special Secretary of the State Disaster Management Authority and Revenue Department, DC Rana, said, "We have recorded over ₹400 crore in losses so far, as entered in our system. But the actual damage is likely to be much higher. Our primary focus at the moment is on search, rescue, and restoration."
Speaking about Mandi district, he said, "A village in Mandi has been devastated.". "Senior officials are stationed in the area, with engineers from the PWD, Electricity Board, and Jal Shakti Department overseeing restoration efforts."
Over 250 roads remained blocked, over 500 electricity transformers were out of service, and nearly 700 drinking water supply schemes have been impacted due to the incessant rain-triggered cloudbursts, flash floods throughout the state.
Similarly, in Shimla, the incessant rains brought normal life to still. Several schools' classrooms were inundated, causing school closures.
