Hyderabad-Vijaywada Expressway Update: In a major update for the residents of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the Central government has decided to widen the Hyderabad-Vijaywada Expressway. Currently having four lanes, the e-way will be upgraded to 6 lanes with an estimated cost of Rs 7,106 crore.

On Saturday, Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy announced that the government is working on the aspirational project. He said it while addressing an inaugural event of the Amberpet flyover. The project will significantly enhance connectivity between two key cities of two neighbouring states. Despite having four lanes, the highway faces traffic congestion, and accidents mostly between the areas of Nalgonda, Suryapet, and Nandigama.

Hyderabad-Vijaywada Expressway: From 2-lane to 6-lane

The stretch under consideration runs 161.58 km between Sangareddy to Choutuppal. Till 2010, the highways used to have only two lanes. Under the UPA government, it was widened to a 4-lane expressway. But with the passing time, the vehicular strain on the e-way is increasing, and there is a need for further width expansions.

Reports suggest that Telangana Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, who comes from Nalgonda district, has played a key role in convincing Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to approve the project.

He emphasised the rising accidents on the roads as his own son Prateek Reddy died in a Hyderabad Outer Ring Road accident.

New road from Hyderbad to Srisailam

Union Minister Reddy also talked about the government's plan to develop new roads to reduce the Hyderabad-Srisailam travel time.

It is worth mentioning here that Srisailam is one of the most revered religious sites as it is home to one of the eighteen Shakti Peethas and one of the twelve Jyotirlingas.

Reddy added that the Centre has spent more than Rs 1.26 lakh crore on road infrastructure in the last 10 years. He added that in 2014, Telangana had only 2,500 kilometers of national highways, but the number has risen to 5,200 km now.
