A student from Telangana allegedly died by suicide at the Indian Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-Kharagpur) on Tuesday night. Police recovered the body of the fourth-year student under mysterious circumstances from the students’ hostel at the university campus in the West Midnapore district of West Bengal, on Wednesday morning.
The deceased, identified as K Kiran Chandra (21), was a student of electrical engineering. He was staying at the Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Hall of Residence. IIT Kharagpur in a statement said Chandra was with two of his statements in their hostel room.
Later, the other two students left for academic activities and around 8.30 pm, fellow boarders of the LBS Hall found his room locked from inside. The university administration said that the door was forced open and they found the body of the student hanging in the room. Despite all efforts by doctors, Chandra was declared dead around 11:30 pm.

The family of the deceased reached the campus this morning. Police registered a case of unnatural death and the body was sent for postmortem examination at the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital. An investigation has been initiated into the matter and the initial assumption is that this is a death by suicide.

The campus of IIT-Kharagpur has witnessed several mysterious death cases of students since last year. A student named Faizan Ahmed was found dead in a hostel room in October 2022, under unclear conditions. The case was taken up by the Calcutta High Court. Similarly, in June this year, another student, Suriya Dipen, was discovered dead on the campus.
