The theme for this year’s celebrations is ‘Viksit Bharat’, which aligns with the government’s aim to transform the country into a developed nation by 2047Amid the celebration there lies a lot of confusion among people whether this year’s Independence Day will be India’s 77th or 78th.
77th Or 78th Independence Day?
After over 200 years, the British colonial rule in India came to an end on August 15, 1947. Since that historic day, August 15 is celebrated as India’s Independence Day. The nation commemorated its first anniversary of independence on August 15, 1948. Therefore, the year 2024 will be observed as the 77th anniversary of India’s Independence.
From a different perspective, if we consider the year 1947 as the start point, then August 15, 2024, will be the 78th time the date is observed. In this case, it shall be right to say that India will celebrate its 78th Independence Day on August 15, 2024.
In conclusion, India will celebrate its 78th Independence Day in 2024, which marks 77 years of freedom since 1947.
