The security agencies were alerted on Tuesday after a Pakistani pigeon was found in Pangali, a border village in Jammu and Kashmir. Initially, there were speculations that perhaps the handlers of cross-border terrorists had sent a message to their sleeper cells or overground workers through this means.
This came following a truce brokered between India and Pakistan on Saturday after a week of intense military escalation from both sides. Security has since been heightened and forces are maintaining a strict vigil along the borders.
Upon being alerted, security agencies captured the pigeon and inspected it for any chips or devices, but found nothing suspicious.
The pigeon had a ring on its leg with a number written in Urdu, along with a name. Upon investigation, it was found that the ring mentioned the name of someone named Shah and the word "Gharmala."
Gharmala is a city in Punjab, Pakistan. Later, it became clear that the pigeon might have been released by someone in Pakistan and accidentally crossed the border, which happens quite frequently in border areas where Pakistani pigeons are often found.
This pigeon landed on the roof of former sarpanch Pathan Singh in Pangali village, Jagran.com reported. His son, Rajeshwar Singh, noticed it and called a local pigeon enthusiast who captured the bird. Upon seeing the ring on its leg, they immediately informed Khour police, after which police and security agency officials reached the spot.
A pigeon enthusiast from Jammu explained that pigeon races are held during the month of May. These competitions are currently ongoing in Jammu as well. Pakistan also holds large-scale pigeon racing events. Therefore, it often happens that during these races, Indian pigeons cross over to Pakistan and vice versa.
All pigeon keepers place identification rings on the legs of their pigeons for recognition.

He said this appears to be one such case. Khour Police have also denied any suspicious activity in this matter.
