Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday blamed Congress for dividing Vande Mataram into two parts for “politics of appeasement", adding that if the national song had not been split, "the country itself would not have been divided".

"Several people like me, whether the Congress likes it or not, believe that the Partition of country would not have taken place if Vande Mataram would not have been divided into two parts due to policy of appeasement,” Amid Shah told Rajya Sabha during debate on 'Vande Mataram'.

"When Vande Mataram completed 100 years, an Emergency was imposed. There was no scope for the glorification of the national song. Indira Gandhi imprisoned those who propagated and raised the slogan of Vande Mataram... When discussions were held in the Lok Sabha yesterday, both members of the Gandhi family were absent from the House. Right from Jawaharlal Nehru to the current leadership, Congress continues to oppose Vande Mataram," Shah added.

Shah further highlighted that Vande Mataram showcased our dedication towards Mother India."Vande Mataram, an immortal creation reflects key traditional and nationalistic values of our country; dedication towards Mother India."

Amit Shah also added that government was open to debate on all issues. He said, "We are not the ones who boycott Parliament-if the House is allowed to function, every issue can be discussed."
