The Northern Railway has set a record in scrap disposal by earning a revenue of Rs 781.07. This outperforms the Railway Board’s annual target of Rs 530 crore by 147.36 per cent.
The earnings have made the Northern Railway the only division to cross the scrap sale figure of Rs 700 crore.
General Manager of Northern Railway Ashok Kumar Verma said that Northern Railway remained number one in scrap sales among all the zonal railways and production units of Indian Railways by disposing of junk worth Rs 781.07 crore in the financial year 2024-25.
This is the fourth consecutive year when Northern Railway has registered total sales of more than Rs 600 crore and has been ranked first among all Zonal Railways and Production units for four consecutive years. In the process, Northern Railway conducted 592 e-auctions from eight locations.
Notably, the junk lying along the tracks becomes a hindrance to safe rail operations. The work of removing junk from the tracksides and other places is being done rapidly in the Northern Railway.
Scrap disposal is a vital activity; it not only generates revenue but also helps in keeping the workplace and tracks clean and tidy. Rail pieces, sleepers, tie bars, etc., lying around railway lines cause hindrance to safe train operations.
Northern Railway has taken up the disposal of abandoned structures such as staff quarters, cabins, sheds, water tanks, etc, in mission mode. This has not only generated revenue but also freed up valuable space, preventing misuse of these structures.
Their prompt disposal has been given priority at the highest level. Stocked concrete sleepers are also being sold in large quantities, freeing up valuable area for railway activities and generating revenue as well.
This financial year, Northern Railway became the only Railway to send the Elastic Rail Clips (ERC) lying idle in various sections to RWF-Bengaluru/RWP-Bela (Bihar) to utilise them as raw material for manufacturing new wheels and axles.
