The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) has completed the construction of the country’s longest cantilever glass bridge. VMRDA Chairman MV Pranav Gopal said the bridge will open to tourists by September 25 and will become a major attraction in the State.

India’s Longest Cantilever Glass Bridge: Cost And Parameters 

1. Built at a cost of Rs 7 crore.

2. Measures 55 metres in length.

3. Breaks the previous record held by Kerala’s Vagamon Glass Bridge (38 metres).

4. Constructed with three layers of 40 mm-thick tempered laminated German glass panels.

5. Supported by approximately 40 tonnes of manufactured steel.

6. Designed as a transparent walkway for tourists.

India’s  Longest Cantilever Glass Bridge: Capacity And Safety 

1. Safety is at the forefront of its design.

2. The glass can hold more than 100 people.

3. It can support loads of 500 kg per square metre.

4. Visitors will be admitted in a batch of 40 people to ensure a secure, crowd-friendly experience.

5. The structure can withstand winds of up to 250 km/h.

6. It is built to resist cyclonic forces, crucial for a coastal city that often experiences storms like Cyclone Hudhud.

7. The hardened glass is reportedly designed to withstand even hammer smashes.

The bridge stands about 862 feet (262 metres) above sea level, offering stunning vistas of the Bay of Bengal, Vizag’s skyline, and the surrounding hills. Its cantilever design creates the impression of gliding above the landscape.

With technical support from Bharat Mata Ventures of Kerala, the firm behind the Vagamon Glass Bridge, Visakhapatnam-based SSM Shipping and Logistics is executing the project under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Trishul Project

He added that a foundation stone was recently laid for the Trishul Project atop Kailasagiri, with an estimated cost of Rs 5.5 crore. The 55-foot Trishul structure will be built using Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) for its lightweight, weather-resistant, and durable properties, enabling it to withstand coastal winds.
