The Indore Metro Rail Project achieved a major milestone on Saturday, October 18, on the day of Dhanteras, with the commencement of the first segment casting for its underground corridor. The event was inaugurated by S Krishna Chaitanya, the managing director of the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL).

“We need quality construction while adhering to safety norms at the same time. Our construction work should cause minimal disruption to the commuters during the entire tenure of the project,” he added, reported by the Free Press Journal.

The underground segment is constructed by a joint Venture of Hindustan Construction Co. Ltd. and Tata Projects Ltd. The entire stretch spans 8.626 km along the Yellow Line, connecting the Indore railway station to Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport.

The Joint Venture is responsible for constructing twin tunnels and seven stations, including Rajwada, Chhota Ganpati, Bada Ganpati, Ramchandra Nagar, BSF/Kalani Nagar, and the airport terminal.

Besides overlooking the underground construction work, the MPMRCL official also conducted an on-site inspection of the Priority Corridor, riding the metro from Super Corridor-02 Station to Vijay Nagar Station. During the visit, he assessed system installations, track infrastructure, and station preparedness at major locations like Malviya Nagar Station, ensuring that both civil and system works were progressing in line with the project timeline.

Later, a comprehensive review meeting was held at the Gandhinagar office, with participation from officials of MPMRCL, civil and system contractors, and general consultants. The discussions mainly centred around the underground stretch and priority corridors, which is anticipated to carry the bulk of the passenger load.

The underground terminal is the only underground stretch of the 33.53 km stretch of Phase I of Indore Metro. The rest of the line consists of elevated sections and is managed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL). Earlier, the yellow line of the Indore metro was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August.
