Continuing the debates on the designs of bridges, Indore’s Z-shaped bridge with a sharp 90-degree turn on two points sparked safety concerns on the internet. The Public Works Department (PWD) is building a Z-shaped Railway Overbridge near Polo Ground, garnering shocking reactions from the locals as well as experts. Earlier, a controversial bridge in Bhopal’s Aishbag with a sharp 90-degree turn triggered criticism on social media.

The ROB, which is being constructed to connect Laxmibai Nagar to the Polo Ground via Bhagirathpura and MR-4, features a sharp 90-degree turn at two points of the bridge. Two sharp 90-degree turns from Laxmibai Nagar and another towards MR-4 fear to become accident hotspots once operational.

A truck driver near the railway goods warehouse told NDTV, “If an accident happens, we will not be responsible. The government will have to answer, the driver warned, not seeking to be named.” These sharp turns prove to be extremely difficult and dangerous, he added.

Taking a jibe at the state government, the Congress leader Sajjan Singh Verma said, “The city's minister must be asleep, or the PWD minister is out of his senses. It looks like Indore engineers are trying to do Bhopal's blunder by adding not one but two 90-degree turns.”

ROB’s 90-Degree Z-Shaped Design To Be Reassessed

Indore MP Shankar Lalwani reviewed the bridge map during a government meeting in June and said, “I have asked the officials to rectify this dangerous turn to prevent potential accidents and traffic chaos.” The PWD officials have also decided to reassess the design due to growing concerns.

“We are re-examining the design following concerns raised in the media. Necessary improvements will be made if required,” Executive Engineer Gurmeet Kaur Bhatia said.

However, PWD Minister Rakesh Singh said in a statement that the bridge’s design incorporates a turning radius of 20 metres, which, according to him, meets engineering standards. The design is set at 20 kmph, and it is designed to adjust to the available space.

The controversy over the Z-shaped design of Indore’s bridge comes after Bhopal’s 90-degree bridge triggered debates on social media, leading to the suspension of seven engineers.
