People preparing to travel home for Diwali are facing difficulties due to a technical snag on the IRCTC website. Users are reporting problems with logging in and booking tickets. The company has stated that it will take time to resolve the issue. Users report that the problems began as early as 9 am.
This is not the first time the IRCTC train ticket booking site has gone down. Previously, this occurred three times in December 2024. This time, the service went down just one day before Dhanteras, precisely when Tatkal bookings were scheduled to begin.
How To Book Tatkal Train Tickets
With Diwali just a few days away, people across the country are preparing to go home for the festival. However, getting a confirmed train ticket is not an easy task right now. If you do not plan properly, you might end up on the waiting list. Here are five easy and useful tips to help you get a confirmed Tatkal ticket quickly this Diwali.
1. Log in Early and Plan Everything in Advance Tatkal booking starts one day before your travel date—at 10 am for AC coaches and 11 for Sleeper Class. Do not wait until the last minute. Log in at least 10-15 minutes before the window opens. Keep your train number, route, and class pre-selected so you can proceed directly to payment as soon as booking begins. Every second counts here.
2. Use the 'Save Passenger Details' Feature When everyone else is booking, typing in passenger names, ages, and ID numbers can waste your precious seconds. IRCTC allows you to save passenger information in your profile. Use this feature. When you are ready to book, simply select the saved list, and you will skip an entire step in the process.
3. Use a Fast and Stable Internet Connection A slow internet connection can ruin your chances of booking a Tatkal ticket. Try to use a high-speed broadband or a reliable mobile data connection. Booking on a laptop or desktop is better, as mobile apps can sometimes slow down during high traffic. Also, do not log in from multiple devices—this can cause session errors and slow things down.
4. Opt for Instant Payment As soon as you get a ticket, you must pay immediately, or the seat will go to someone else. The fastest methods are UPI, net banking, or saved card details. Avoid slow payment options like e-wallets or bank transfers. Keep your UPI PIN or card details handy so you don't waste time searching for them as time runs out.

5. Keep an Eye on Seat Availability A few minutes before the Tatkal window opens, check the seat availability on your chosen train. Keep the page open and refresh carefully to avoid overloading the site. If the seats on your preferred train fill up quickly, keep a backup train or an alternative class ready. Flexibility can often get you a confirmed seat.
