Israel-Hamas War: Israel's Foreign Minister expressed his country's gratitude for India's support of Tel Aviv in its military campaign against Palestinian militant outfit Hamas after holding telephonic discussion with his Indian counterpart, S Jaishankar, on Friday.

"Thank you [Dr S Jaishankar] for your support of Israel and of its war against the Hamas terrorist organisation. Our war is the entire democratic world's war against a despicable terrorist organisation that is worst than ISIS," Israeli Fireign Minister Eli Cohen posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Israeli forces are currently in the middle of a ground assault on the Gaza Strip with the stated objective of freeing hostages captured by Hamas militants during their October 7 rampage on Israeli 7. The ground offensive was launched after weeks of Israeli bombing of Gaza and simultaneous warnings by Israel to residents of the northern half of the Palestinian territory to move southward.

"Spoke this afternoon with FM Eli Choen of Israel. Appreciated his sharing [of] the Israeli assessment of the current situation. Reiterated our firm commitment to countering terrorism, observance of international humanitarian law and for a two-state solution," External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar wrote on X after his latest conversation with Cohen.

Addressing the Joint Secretary Session of the Senate's External Affairs and Defence Commission in Italy's Rome, Jaishankar on Friday reiterated New Delhi's long-standing support of a 'two-state solution' for the resolution of the Israel-Palestine conflict.

"Within this we have to find a balance between different issues. Because there is no question. If there is issue of terrorism, and we all find terrorism unacceptable, we have to stand up. But there is also an issue of Palestine. There has to be solution for the problems faced by the Palestinian people," Jaishankar stated.
