Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President on late Monday evening with two years to go for the end of his five-year tenure. He tendered his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu. Although Dhankhar cited health issues as the reason for stepping down, the sudden exit has political circles speculating the reasons behind the move.

Jagdeep Dhankhar Retirement Benefits

According to rules, if a Vice-President steps down after completing more than two years of the tenure, they will be entitled to the pension and facilities linked to the post, according to a Live Hindustan report.

The salary for the Vice-President is 48 lakh per annum (LPA), according to the 2018 Budget.

Former vice-presidents reportedly receive 50-60 per cent of their salary in the form of pension, Live Hindustan reported. Accordingly, Dhankar is expected to receive more than Rs 2 lakh as pension amount.

Other facilities that Dhankhar is expected to get include:

-Type VIII government bungalow

-Free air

-Free rail travel

-Free healthcare

-A private doctor, according to Live Hindustan

Jagdeep Dhankhar will also likely get two personal assistants (PAs). Along with this, his wife will be provided with a private secretary. The government will also cover the electricity and water bills for the bungalow the former Vice President would be residing in. Former V-Ps also get some furniture, appliances and two mobile phones.

ECI Begins Preparations For Vice-Presidential Election

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially begun its preparations for the upcoming Vice-Presidential elections. The Election Commission has stated that once all necessary groundwork is completed, it will announce the election schedule for the Vice President’s office at the earliest possible time.

In a formal press release, the ECI confirmed, "The MHA vide its Gazette Notification dated July 22, 2025 has notified the resignation of Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, Vice President of India." Under Article 324 of the Constitution, the ECI is responsible for conducting the election for the Vice President. The entire process is regulated by The Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, along with The Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974.
