Jammu News: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced on Sunday that the newly constructed 4-lane Banihal bypass is set to be operational within the next 15 days. This bypass will redirect traffic away from Banihal town on the crucial Jammu-Srinagar national highway, significantly reducing travel delays caused by congestion in the town.
The project, which cost Rs 224.44 crore, includes four viaducts covering 1,513 metres and three culverts, aimed at alleviating persistent traffic bottlenecks created by roadside markets and vendors. In a post on X, Gadkari noted that traffic will initially use two lanes, with plans to expand to four lanes after completing junction developments.
"This vital infrastructure enhances regional connectivity, bolsters national security logistics and boosts tourism in Jammu and Kashmir," Gadkari stated. He credited the project's success to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting its role in fostering economic growth and enhancing the region's appeal as a tourist destination.
Tunnels Between Jammu And Srinagar
Gadkari also pointed out that several tunnels and flyovers have been constructed to shorten the distance between Jammu and Srinagar. Notable among these are the Nashri Tunnel and the Pir Panjal Tunnel, which circumvent the often snowbound areas of the Pir Panjal and Patnitop sectors that frequently face blockages during heavy snowfall. These tunnels have transformed the Jammu-Srinagar highway into an all-weather route.

However, challenges remain, particularly on the 52-kilometre stretch from Ramsoo to Ramban. While tunnels at Panthyal and Khoni Nallah have improved conditions, this stretch is still prone to landslides and shooting stones, especially during rain.
Vande Bharat Train Operational From Jan 26
Additionally, the introduction of the Vande Bharat train, operational from January 26, will revolutionise travel between Jammu and the Valley. This train service is expected to fulfil a 70-year-old aspiration for better transport connectivity for Kashmiri horticulturists, traders, students and the general public.
