Jet Airways Founder Naresh Goyal has been remanded to 14-day judicial custody by a special PMLA Court in Mumbai on Thursday in a money laundering case linked to an alleged fraud of Rs 538 crore at the Canara Bank.

The court has accepted Goyal’s request to send him to the Arthur Road jail in South Mumbai. The 74-year-old businessman was presented before the court following the conclusion of his ED remand. The court remanded him in judicial custody as no further remand was sought by the central probe agency.

The Mumbai Court earlier sent the Jet Airways founder to ED custody till September 11. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on September 1 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after an extensive grilling session at the central agency’s office.

In the application, Goyal mentioned that he was suffering from ischemic heart disease and was operated on at the Asian Heart Institute for “treatment of 80 per cent of blockages in his left main artery which is a life threatening condition,” as reported by the news agency PTI.

The ED investigation against Goyal is based on a case initiated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in May on the complaint of Canara Bank. The CBI registered an FIR against the Jet Airways chairman, his wife Anita and others in a money laundering case.

The FIR was registered on the complaint of Canara Bank, alleging that it sanctioned credit limits and loans to Jet Airways (India) Ltd worth Rs 848.86 crore, of which Rs 538.62 crore is still outstanding.

Earlier, the ED conducted multi-city raids in connection with the money laundering case against the former promoter of Jet Airways and his associates.
