Omar Abdullah confirmed on Friday that there is an ongoing discussion with Congress regarding their letter of support to the JKNC for the Chief Minister post. He further stated that he sought support from Congress before reaching out to the governor. On Thursday, JKNC legislators unanimously elected Omar Abdullah as the leader of the Legislative Party, allowing him to stake claim in forming the government in the Union Territory.
Four other independent candidates have also supported the party, helping them cross the majority mark on their own. On the party's legislature's decision, Omar Abdullah's father and party president Farooq Abdullah said, "A meeting of the party legislature was held where everyone unanimously chose Omar Abdullah as its leader."

Following the meeting, Omar Abdullah expressed his gratitude towards the party members. He said, “There was a meeting of the National Conference’s legislative party, and the legislative party decided on its leader. I am deeply grateful to the National Conference legislators for reposing faith in me, trusting me, and giving me the chance to go to Raj Bhavan and stake a claim to form the government.”
The meeting was held after INDIA registered a comfortable victory in the Union Territory. In the first legislative assembly election held after a decade, the JKNC managed to win 42 seats, making it the single-largest party. Its partners, the Congress and the CPI (M) won a total of 7 seats, bringing the tally to 49 seats. The BJP managed to win 29 seats, making it the second-largest party.
Earlier, Omar Abdullah claimed that the people of Jammu and Kashmir want the restoration of the state and are not satisfied with the abrogation of Article 370. However, he further claimed that there was no point in asking the present Modi-led central government to restore Article 370, as they only abrogated it. He emphasised that he would talk about the issue once the opposition formed a government at the centre.
