Heavy rainfall on Sunday led to severe waterlogging at an under-construction underpass in Sangoor, located along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Udhampur district, Jammu and Kashmir. The flooding submerged two vehicles under nearly four to five feet of water, drawing concerns over infrastructure resilience during the ongoing monsoon.
According to reports, the underpass was still under construction when heavy rain lashed the region, leaving portions of the road inundated. "Severe waterlogging was witnessed at an under-construction underpass at Sangoor on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Udhampur on Sunday," a source said.
Elsewhere in Jammu and Kashmir, the rainfall also led to rising water levels in local rivers, particularly the Dharhali and Saktoh rivers in the Rajouri district, triggering concerns of possible flooding in low-lying areas. The monsoon’s arrival has brought widespread downpours across several states, causing flash floods, waterlogging, and rising river levels.
In neighbouring Himachal Pradesh, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) reported a rising toll from monsoon-related incidents. Since the monsoon began on June 20, at least 74 people have died, 47 due to rain-triggered disasters and 27 in road accidents.
According to the SDMA’s cumulative report released on July 6, natural calamities such as landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, electrocution, snake bites, and falls from heights have been the primary causes of rain-related deaths. Mandi district recorded the highest number of fatalities (17), followed by Kangra (11) and Una (4).

Cloudbursts alone claimed 14 lives, flash floods led to 8 deaths, and electrocution incidents resulted in 4 fatalities. The report also noted six deaths from people falling off steep slopes or trees.
In terms of road accidents during the same period, Chamba district reported the highest number of deaths at six, followed by Bilaspur and Kullu with three fatalities each.
As the monsoon continues to intensify across North India, authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
