Kalita Majhi, Domestic Help Who Became Bengal MLA, Says 'She Doesn't Have Good Saree To Wear For Oath Ceremony'

The West Bengal Assembly election results, announced on May 4, have produced many stories, but the success of Kalita Majhi from the Guskara region stands out as one of the most inspiring. Rising from the humble role of domestic help to becoming a BJP MLA, Kalita overcame poverty, struggle, and social barriers. She has not only won the Ausgram assembly seat but also became a symbol of hope for many women.

After winning the election, she said, “This is a win for the people of Ausgram who were tolerating corruption. This is the result of the fight against the lack of women’s safety, schools, colleges, and hospitals. I will keep on fighting for the cause of Ausgram as long as required.”

A Life Full of Struggle

After marrying a plumber in 2006, Majhi continued working in two households in Guskara. Earning a monthly income of Rs 4,500, she supported her family. Balancing household chores, childcare, and party work was not easy, but she managed. Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speeches, she regularly attended BJP rallies.

When she returned home late on Monday night after winning the election, there was no grand reception or celebration waiting for her. Tired and hungry, Majhi ate a simple meal of Aloo-Potoler Jhol (potato and pointed gourd curry) prepared by her mother-in-law. On Tuesday, she went about her day as usual, doing household chores like laundry.

No Saree For Swearing-in Ceremony

Despite becoming an MLA, she has not forgotten her roots. Speaking to news agency ANI, she said, “I want to work for the poor, especially for women like me. The BJP works for the upliftment of women and the poor.” She also said she had raised her voice on local issues through her work at the municipal level.

Majhi further mentioned that she plans to take her husband and son to the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata, but she does not currently have a suitable saree for the occasion. Moved by her simplicity, her employer Krishna Patra has decided to gift her a saree for the event.
