The auto-taxi unions in Karnataka have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the state transport department, warning it to defy state transport rules if action is not taken against the ride services companies Rapido and Uber for resuming their Bike-Taxi operation within seven days.
Here’s What Karnatak Auto-Taxi Union Demanded
According to a report by the Times of India, the unions have urged the department to enforce the court order and stop both platforms from providing Bike-Taxi services.
The union warned the transport department that if their demands are not met within the given timeline, they will change their yellow number plate to a white one and will operate on an arbitrary fare structure, defying the fare structure fixed by the government.
Rapido-Uber Violating Court Order?
State president of the Karnataka Drivers’ Association, Narayanaswamy, alleged that ride-providing platforms Rapido and Uber are violating court orders, as they do not follow legal restrictions. “Rapido and Uber resumed bike-taxi services in defiance of high court orders. Despite the court making it very clear that they are not allowed to resume bike-taxi services, they resumed the same. They show no regard for the state government. We demand that the transport department take strict action against their blatant violation,” he said, as per the report.
The Unions have alleged that both companies have resumed bike-taxi services despite a high court order prohibiting such operations.
The unions have issued a warning amid prolonged friction between the traditional mode of transport system and app-based transport in the state. Autos and Taxis are a vital transport medium in Bengaluru and other Karnataka cities, and if the demands of unions are not met, it could severely disrupt commuting patterns.
