Karnataka BJP MLA sparked a controversy by saying that Hindus need to have more children to prevent Muslims from becoming a majority in the country. The BJP lawmaker made the controversial statement at a religious event in Belthangady taluk on January 7, where he claimed that Muslims are giving birth to four children each while Hindus mostly have one or two kids.
Harish Poonja said that if this trend continues, the population of Hindus will come down to 20 crore while the population of Muslims will rise to 80 crore and asked the audience to imagine the plight of Hindus in such a scenario.
"A few people think that the population of Hindus in India is 80 crore and Muslims are just 20 crore. But, you need to think in another direction. It is our belief that Muslims are lesser in numbers and they won't do any harm. But Muslims are giving birth to four children each and we (Hindus) mostly have one or two kids,'' Poonja stated.

"Once, the Muslim population touches 80 crore and the number of Hindus depletes, can you imagine the plight of Hindus in the country,'' he added.
The BJP MLA from the Udupi seat also urged the Hindus to think about the days when Muslims will outnumber the Hindu population in India. However, his comments sparked controversy among the people accusing him of spreading unnecessary fear and hate among the community by creating a hoax about Muslims outnumbering Hindus in India.
