A Dalit man was allegedly beaten to death over an ‘illicit affair’ with a married woman belonging to a different caste in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district. The incident occurred on Monday in Jasaula village in the Khatauli area, where the villagers thrashed him over his suspected love affair with a woman, who was in her 30s. 

Police found the victim in a semi-conscious state with his hands and feet tied. The man was suffering from multiple injuries after which he was rushed to the hospital but he succumbed to those on the same day of the incident.

"He was beaten through the night and found with injuries all over the body at a nearby house on Monday. A muffler, which was used as a noose, was tied around his neck," the victim's brother, Ankur Kumar, said as quoted by news agency IANS.

The victim, identified as Ankit Kumar, was allegedly in love with a woman of the same village, who was in her 30s and was already married, an official said. He stated that Kumar's family told police that he was taken by a man from their home on Sunday. 

The initial investigation revealed that the crime took place over an illicit affair. Police detained the woman’s husband and a few villagers after the incident.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kharauli, Ravi Shankar Mishra said police registered a case against 'unknown persons' under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The body of the victim was also sent for autopsy and the report for the same is awaited.
