In a chilling incident, a class 9 student of a government-run residential school gave birth to a baby boy in her school's toilet in Karnataka's Yadgir district, the police said on Friday.
According to the information, the incident took place at around 2 pm on August 27 at a school in Shahapur taluk. The police said that the matter came to light after the girl was seen in labour by one of her classmates and the administration was alerted.
The FIR has been registered in the incident. According to the FIR, the girl is 17 years and seven months old and was full-term pregnant. The FIR states that she was sexually assaulted by an unidentified person about nine months ago.
The girl, who was under "immense stress," initially refused to reveal details of the incident or the person involved. The only thing she told the authorities was that she developed stomach pain while in the washroom and delivered the baby there.
The police said that both the girl and her child were rushed to the hospital and are reported to be safe. During the investigation, the police identified the accused as a 28-year-old man.
Speaking about the incident, a senior police official said the girl will be counselled after she recovers and is declared fit by the doctors.
The official said that after this, police will ascertain what happened and whether she knew the accused or not. The police emphasised that neither the school administration nor the victim's brother reported the incident.
The District Child Protection Officer filed a complaint based on which a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered against the accused.

The cases have also been filed against the hostel warden, school principal, staff nurse, and the victim's brother for not informing them about the girl's pregnancy.
The police also said that the girl had been irregular in school since the academic year started. The Karnatak Residential Educational Institutions Society (KREIS) has taken action into the case. The KREIS has suspended four staff members of the school, including the warden and principal, for alleged dereliction of duty and negligence in monitoring the students' educational and health conditions.
