Kerala Government on Monday condemned the lynching Of Chhattisgarh man last week in Palakkad district after he was suspected of theft and belonging to Bangladesh. The deceased has been identified as Ramnarayan Baghel, 31, belonging to Chhattisgarh's Sakti district. He had visited Pallakad in search of work on December 13 and was employed as a daily-wage labourer at a construction site.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday described the incident as "deeply disturbing", promising justice to the family of Ramnarayan Baghel. As per news agency PTI, Pinarayi Vijayan said such acts tarnish the reputation of a progressive society like Kerala. He has also demanded collective vigilance to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
According to a report by The Times of India, Ramnarayan's relative Kishan Baghel said that the deceased went to Kerala on the request of a distant relative, Shashikant Baghel. The report quoted Kishan saying, "Ramnarayan was extremely poor and is survived by his wife Lalita and two young sons, aged around eight and nine."
The local police in Kerala identified him using his Aadhaar card and contacted the Chhattisgarh Police. As part of the ongoing investigation in the case, the police have taken five people into custody.
A purported video of the incident has gone viral on social media, showing Ramnarayan surrounded by a group of people. They could be heard asking if he was Bangladeshi. According to a report by NDTV, the police have confirmed that no stolen property was recovered from his possession.

The autopsy report of Ramnarayan stated that he sustained over 80 injuries on his body. The doctors, who conducted his post-mortem, noted that Ramnarayan sustained severe head injuries, excessive bleeding, and multiple wounds. The report stated that blood was oozing from his chest during the assault, highlighting the gruesome and horrific ordeal Ramnarayan went through.
The arrested accused have been identified as Murli, Prasad, Anu, Bipin, and Anandan. They all are the residents of Attapallam village and were arrested on December 18.
