Kerala Weather Update: With monsoon to hit the state in the coming few days, Kerala is bracing for extremely heavy rains. The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for four districts of northern Kerala, including  Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, and Kozhikode, on Tuesday. Further advance of the southwest monsoon is expected after the state was lashed with heavy rains, resulting in casualties. The Southwest monsoon was previously forecasted to reach the state by May 27. 

“The conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest Monsoon over Kerala during the next 4-5 days,” the IMD said on Tuesday.

Sirens were sounded at 5 pm in Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts after the Central Meteorological Department issued a red alert for adverse weather conditions. The sirens signify that the region is expected to receive over 204.4 mm of rainfall in the next few hours.

Kerala Weather Today: Orange Alert In Kannur, Kozhikode

The local weather report of the India Meteorological Department has placed a few districts of Kerala under orange alert on Wednesday for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds at 30-40 kmph. These districts include Kannur and Kozhikode. 

Yellow Alert In Kochi, Munnar, 6 Others

The weather department has placed 8 districts of Kerala on yellow alert as it anticipates that very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms with lightning, and gusty winds will hit these districts. The districts of Kerala placed under yellow alert are Kochi, Munnar, Kottayam, Kumarakom, Palakkad, Pattambi, Punalur, and  Thavanur.

Safety Guidelines Amid Kerala Rains 

Authorities have urged the public and government departments to exercise extreme caution.

Officials also issued safety advice, urging people living in hilly areas experiencing heavy rain, particularly those at risk of landslides, mudslides, and flash floods, to move to safer locations as early as possible, preferably during daylight hours.

The weather officials on Tuesday announced that the Southwest monsoon can reach Kerala in the next 4-5 days, which was earlier anticipated by May 27. If it happens, then it will be the earliest onset over the Indian mainland since 2009, when rain began on May 23, against its usual June 1 time.
