Kerala Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday stated that several districts of Kerala are likely to receive light to heavy rain in the upcoming few days. While providing details, the weather department stated that the central and northern regions of the state are expected to witness heavy rain for the next five days. Apart from this, the southern districts are also likely to witness moderate rain for the next few days. While the rain is likely to provide relief from heat by reducing the temperature, it is also expected to lead to issues like waterlogging and power outages.

The weather department issued an orange alert for heavy rain in several districts, including Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, and Wayanad. It stated that these districts are expected to receive rainfall of 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in the next 24 hours. Apart from this, a yellow alert has been issued for other districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts today.

The weather department stated that several cities witnessed infrastructure damage due to heavy rain and gusty winds. The surge in water level of local rivers led to the displacement of hundreds of people to relief camps in Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Idukki districts. In July last year, more than 200 people lost their lives and many houses were destroyed in a landslide in the region.
