In a major development, the Kolkata Police on Saturday arrested the security guard of the South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata's Kasba area. This marks the fourth arrest in the case, including the accused Monojit Mishra, a 31-year-old former student of the college.
The security guard has been identified as a 55-year-old Pinaki Banerjee. The other two accused arrested in the case are identified as 19-year-old Zaib Ahmed and 20-year-old Pramit Mukhopadhyay. Here are top 10 developments in the case so far:
1. National Commission of Women (NCW) member Archana Majumdar alleged that the medical examination of the victim was not done, and the Kolkata Police is intentionally delaying the process. Her claim came a day after reports surfaced that the medical examination was conducted. She also said that the police were not disclosing the location of the victim or any other details to them, despite their efforts to make contact with the SP.
2. News agency PTI reported that the medical examination of the victim was conducted, and the findings corroborated the woman's claims. The medical examination revealed forceful penetration, bite marks on the neck, and nail scratches on her body.
3. The victim in her complaint to the police alleged that she was beaten with a hockey stick. She alleged that the three accused recorded the act and threatened to cooperate and keep her mouth shut. Prime accused Monojit Mishra also threatened to kill her boyfriend. Expressing the ordeal, she narrated that she touched the feet of the accused but he didn't let her go.
4. Protests erupted across Kolkata on Friday after the case came to light and the prime accused, Monojit Mishra, was identified as a TMC student leader. The left groups laid a siege to the Kasba Police Station where the case was registered.
5. The political slugfest has intensified in the state after the accused was found associated with the ruling TMC. West Bengal LoP Suvendu Adhikari has shared a picture of the accused Mishra with TMP MP and CM Mamata Banerjee's nephew, Abhishek Banerjee.
6. Meanwhile, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee has further intensified the row by making a bizarre statement on the case. Kalyan said, What can be done if a friend rapes a friend. Will the police be in schools? This was done by students to another student. Who will protect her (victim)?"
7. The ruling TMC has assured that justice will be served to the victim while condemning the incident. In a post on X, TMC said, "We unequivocally condemn the tragic rape incident at South Calcutta Law College."
"Kolkata Police have swiftly apprehended all 3 accused, and the full weight of the law will be brought to bear, ensuring the most severe measures are imposed on those found guilty," it added.
8. The Indian Express reported that ]prime accused Mishra, is a member of TMC's student wing and a former president of its college. Even after leaving the college, he had wielded immense clout there and virtually run it.
