Kochi Metro Update: In a major update for the commuters, the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) sated that the much-awaited Pink Line is likely to begin operations in June 2026. The authority stated that the services on corridor connecting Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kaloor to Kakkanad will begin in the next year, providing relief to the commuters. It further stated that the metro line will significantly boost the regional connectivity, cut the travel time and reduce traffic congestion in the key regions. Apart from improving the connectivity, the metro corridor will boost the financial activities in the region.
While providing details, the authority stated that the services will initially only on five stations- Palarivattom Junction, Alinchuvadu, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala, and Padamugal. The KMRL further stated that the services on the remaining stations, including Civil Station Junction, Cochin SEZ, Chittattukara, KINFRA, and Infopark will began by the end of the year. The authority further stated that the estimated cost for the 11.2-kilometers long route is Rs 1,957 crore.
The authorities further stated that a major portion of the construction work on the corridor has been finished. It stated that 1,145 of the total 2,019 piles have been built, adding that 265 of 368 piles and 165 of 469 pile caps have been completed. The KMRL also emphasised that the ridership of Kochi Metro is likely to significantly improve as it passes through several key regions.
The metro services in Kochi carry nearly 30 lakh passengers on a monthly basis, but the ridership may increase up to 50 lakh after the operation of Pink Line. Earlier last week, the authority informed that the Kerala government has approved the first-phase alignment of the Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail project.
While providing details, the authority stated that the first phase alignment will connect several key regions of the city, including Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, Thampanoor bus stand, Central Railway Station, Secretariat, and Medical College.
