Kolkata News: A 35-year-old man, identified as television director Siddhant Das, was arrested after crashing into a crowded area in Thakurpukur, Kolkata, on Sunday. The accused was reportedly driving in a drunken state and the crash resulted in one death and eight injuries. The Kolkata Police also took a female co-passenger into custody. Another woman, who was seated in the rear, fled the scene after the crash.
The victim, Aminur Rahman (63), a vegetable seller at the market, died in the accident, suffered multiple injuries and fell unconscious after being taken to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
According to the police, the incident took place around 9 AM on Sunday when Das, driving from Bakrahat towards Gariahat, lost control of his black SUV and crashed into the busy market area near Thakurpukur police station. Authorities confirmed that Das was drunk at the time of the accident, and four bottles of liquor were found in his vehicle.
Witnesses said the vehicle ploughed through two-wheelers parked outside the market and hit several pedestrians before coming to a halt. "I was standing on the road outside the market as my uncle was selling his wares. Suddenly, I saw a black vehicle crashing into the market. The vehicle hit at least seven people, including a person on a scooter and two others on two bikes," said Manzoor Rahman, Aminur's nephew.
Another witness alleged that the woman seated in the front seat of the SUV repeatedly urged the driver not to stop but to drive away. However, the police were able to apprehend both her and Das as locals confronted them.
"The road is being repaired right now and so, it is now closed to traffic. Vehicles belonging to residents only are allowed here but even those negotiate the stretch very cautiously. The motorist on Sunday morning broke past the guard rails as he dashed into the barricaded stretch and drove recklessly, hitting one person after another," said a senior police officer.
Residents of the area expressed frustration over the lack of vigilance, particularly on a holiday. "Since it was Sunday, the market was very crowded. The road leading to the market had been closed to traffic, but no police were stationed there in the morning," said Biswajit Das, a Thakurpukur resident.
While Rahman and another resident, Joydeb Majumdar (68), were admitted to CMRI Hospital, seven others were discharged after receiving preliminary treatment at a private hospital. Rahman later died, while Majumdar continued to fight for his life.
