Key accused in Kolkata rape case, Manojit Mishra had proposed 24-year -old victim and raped her after she turned his marriage offer down. As anger against the accused continues to rise, chilling information about key offender Manojit Mishra, who is a practising criminal lawyer and the organising secretary of the South Kolkata district of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), has surfaced. 

According to media reports, Manojit Mishra, who is known as ‘Mango’ among his juniors and batchmates, had long shown psychopathic tendencies and a penchant for sexual violence.

According to his classmates and seniors, Mishra would often target girls on campus, including the victim, asking them if they would marry him. He would often make students victims of his harassment with one-liners like, “Tui amay biye korbi (Will you marry me)?" media reports quoted Mishra’s juniors and bachmates. Mishra was expelled from the college’s Trinamool unit in 2021. 

A former student at South Calcutta Law College, who studied during the when Manojit pursued his education at the college, Debolina Das said that the 31-year-old culprit was known was his bullying and was once rusticated from the campus, CNN-News18 reported. 

“Manojit Mishra was in the 2013 batch. He was rusticated because of his behaviour, but later took readmission. He used to call girls to the union room, drink alcohol there, and even kidnap juniors. There were numerous complaints against him, and he was cautioned several times. At one point, he was only allowed to come to college to sit for exams. He always tried to act like a ‘dada’ (local goon), but we tried to stop him," News18 quoted Das as saying.

According to a report, citing inside sources, Mishra would morph images of girls and distribute them among his friends. 

“He filmed private moments with women and showed them to his friends. He had a tendency to record videos of almost everything. He and his aides used to click photographs of women and post them in groups, body shaming them and maligning them," a college insider told The Times of India.

A 24-year-old, first year law student was gange raped inside the college campus on June 25 by college alumnus and his two friends studying Law from the same college. While key accused Mishra raped victim, two aids stood guard at the door. The police have arrested four accused, including a campus security guard.
