Kolkata Metro Update: Kolkata Metro will temporarily halt services along the East-West corridor this month to conduct tests on the Communication-based Train Control (CBTC) system. An official announcement made on Tuesday detailed the service suspension.

Kolkata Metro Services To Halt In Two Phases

The Telegraph report quoted, the spokesperson for Kolkata Metro Railway as confirming that there will be a complete “traffic block” on the Green Line, which runs from Howrah Maidan to Sector 5. This block will take place in two phases: from February 13 to 16 and again from February 20 to 23.

In metro terminology, a “traffic block” refers to the complete suspension of train operations. The authorities are optimistic about the upcoming tests, following the successful completion of tunnelling work between Esplanade and Sealdah stations. They aim to start operations across the full corridor later this year, utilising the advanced CBTC system, which is standard in modern metro networks globally.

Kolkata Metro News: Delays Due To Previous Tunnel Cave-In

Service delays have been caused by several challenges, including a cave-in during tunnelling work at Bowbazar in September 2019, which led to water seepage issues. As a result, the 2.5-km stretch between Esplanade and Sealdah has not yet opened for service. At present, trains operate in two separate sections: a 9.4-km stretch from Sector 5 to Sealdah and a 4.8-km section from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan.
