In a significant development, Kolkata Police allegedly reached the residence of Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee at Shantiniketan on Monday afternoon.

A computer monitor was seen being taken out of the residence by police personnel. Sources indicated that electronic items from inside the house were examined during the visit.

According to reports, a team comprising both uniformed and plainclothes officers entered the residence located on Harishchandra Street in Kolkata. The reason for the police visit has not been officially disclosed so far.

The development takes place as questions are being raised about properties connected to Banerjee, after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) sent notices in July under relevant provisions of the KMC Act, 1980, to the effect that some unauthorised constructions had been observed in her properties and seeking information from her about the same.

Reportedly, the notices are related to 17 to 21 properties linked to Banerjee, his kin or his other connected entities.

Responding to the notices, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said, "According to the KMC Act, we are policymakers, and I have no knowledge about this," distancing the civic body leadership from the action.

The corporation has sent notices to her and other associated bodies to furnish their building plans and structural details in connection with these properties.

The KMC actions are part of a municipality verification exercise and are related to several areas of Kolkata, which have building regulations under probe.

The reaction from the political circle has also increased, with allegations being made by the opposition and refuted by Trinamool Congress, describing it as ‘fabricated and devoid of any credibility’.
