Delhi Red Fort Blast: Jasir Bilal Wani’s father died by suicide in Jammu and Kashmir after his son was arrested in connection with the Red Fort suicide bombing case. The family says the accusations against the youth shattered the father emotionally and led him to take the extreme step.

According to relatives, Bilal Ahmad Wani, a dry-fruit trader from Wanpora in Kulgam, set himself on fire at his home on Sunday morning. He was rushed to District Hospital Kulgam in critical condition and later transferred to Srinagar for treatment, but he died early on Monday.

His sister-in-law, Naseema Akhtar, said the family was devastated after Bilal learnt that his son had been linked to the terror attack. “Today our house is in mourning, and Jasir's one mistake ruined everything,” she said. She added that Bilal had wanted to meet his son and ask him why he had taken such a path. “Bilal Sahib wanted to meet Jasir and ask him why he did this,” she said.

Bilal’s son, Jasir Bilal Wani alias Danish, was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for alleged involvement in the November 10 Red Fort suicide bombing and for links with a “white-collar module” of Jaish-e-Mohammed and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind. He had been detained by Jammu and Kashmir Police three days earlier.

According to investigators, Jasir had allegedly conspired to carry out further attacks using drones and improvised rockets. The NIA claims he had tried to develop these weapons for suspected terrorists, including Dr Umar Nabi, Amir, and others.

Family members say the allegations came as a shock to Bilal, who had always dreamt of a different future for his son. “Bilal wanted Jasir to also become an IAS officer,” Naseema said. She added that the family had never been involved in politics or militancy. “Our family is held in high esteem throughout the area. We have never had any connection with politics or terrorism,” she said.

The family’s home is located near the houses of Dr Adeel and Dr Muzaffar, two brothers whose names have also surfaced in the ongoing investigation. Dr Adeel is in custody after being arrested from Saharanpur–Meerut and police recovered weapons and other material from his locker in GMC Anantnag. His brother, Dr Muzaffar, is believed to be hiding in Afghanistan. “Adeel is our neighbour, but we didn't know what he was doing under the guise of a doctor,” Naseema claimed.

Bilal, along with his son Jasir and brother Naveel Wani, had been detained earlier for questioning and later released. Family members say the humiliation and sudden police action left him emotionally broken. Naseema said he looked “very dejected and lost” when he returned home on Sunday morning. Moments later, he poured petrol over himself and set himself on fire. Neighbours tried to save him, but the injuries were too severe.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be identified, said the incident had shaken the entire locality. “The children who were once praised for their abilities are being caught and roaming around as merchants of death,” he said. At Bilal’s funeral, he added, many people wondered how the actions of the son had pushed the father into despair. “This family is devastated,” he said.
