Uttar Pradesh Weather: A fresh spell of westerly winds linked to an active weather disturbance in the mountains has brought a sharper chill to the city. The cold conditions deepened on Saturday, with the maximum temperature falling by one degree Celsius and the minimum dipping by two degrees. Daytime sunshine also offered little relief as the wind remained strong. Meteorologists expect temperatures to stay below normal in the coming days.
According to Dr Laxmikant, a meteorologist at the Agricultural Science Centre, winter has arrived slightly later this year. He said the recent weakening of La Niña conditions in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, along with a shift towards neutral Indian Ocean Dipole conditions, has led to the rise in cold winds affecting the region.
He explained that even on clear days, the warmth from sunlight is beginning to fade as the season progresses. Fog is also likely to develop during early morning hours. On Saturday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 24 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 7 degrees Celsius. Both temperatures are expected to drop further as the week continues.
Meteorologists note that La Niña is a natural climatic pattern that strengthens cold winds across several regions. The phenomenon has been active this year and may result in an extended winter spell.

The growing cold has raised concerns among farmers, who fear that a prolonged winter could harm December crops. Many worry that continued low temperatures may impact productivity.
Dr Laxmikant has advised farmers to ensure proper protection for livestock during this period. Meanwhile, Dr Parvinder Singh from the district hospital has urged residents to take precautions against the cold. He said that seasonal illnesses tend to rise during such weather and recommended seeking medical care promptly if symptoms appear.
