A leopard has been sighted in Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University, prompting fear on the university campus. The forest department team reached the university campus late at night and confirmed it from the footprints.

The university administration has advised students to stay inside the hostel and stay away from the forests. A rescue operation has been started to trace the predator and catch it.

The leopard was first seen by a student in the mountains of the Aravalli Guest House. The student was feeding dogs and cats there when the leopard was sighted.

He immediately informed the university administration about this. The university's security officials visited the spot. The information was given to the forest department.

A small team from the forest department confirmed the animal to be a leopard based on footprints, following which, the university informally issued a safety advisory.

Everyone has been asked to stay in the hostels. The university has said in the advisory to keep the doors and windows closed. The varsity asked the students and staff to move around in groups, keep lights on in public areas, keep doors of bathrooms etc. closed, be extra vigilant around the stadium and Yamuna banks.

The JNU administration has also ramped up patrol near Kaveri, Periyar and Godavari hostels where differently-abled students live. JNU Dean of Student Welfare Prof Manuradha Chaudhary said security officials are coordinating with the forest department. The team will come at night, and a search operation will be conducted.

Since the rescue operation will be conducted at night, an official holiday notification could not be issued for the students. However, a message has been informally sent to the students and wardens to be cautious, she said.

She said that the big cat has never been seen in the campus before, but since the Aravalli region is known for the presence of leopards, its arrival is not surprising.
