After Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the COVID-19 pandemic in his recent address in Parliament on the West Asia crisis, posts about “India Lockdown Again” and “Lockdown 2026” started circulating on social media. People began discussing online whether a lockdown-like situation would occur in India again. Amid growing uncertainty, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday affirmed that India is closely monitoring the developments in West Asia. In a post on X, he dismissed claims suggesting a potential lockdown in the country as “false.”
Union Minister Hardeep Puri On Lockdown Rumours
Puri clarified that the government is not considering any proposal on Lockdown over India. He said, “Rumours of a lockdown in India are completely false. Let me state this clearly, there is no such proposal under consideration by the Government of India.” He urged the public to not create panic and spread such rumours. “In such times, it is important that we remain calm, responsible, and united. Attempts to spread rumours and create panic in such a situation are irresponsible and harmful,” he added.

He also emphasised that the government is “fully prepared” to handle emergency challenges, and necessary measures have been taken to ensure availability of fuel, energy and other commodities. “Under the leadership of Hon’ble PM @narendramodi Ji, all necessary steps are being taken to ensure uninterrupted availability of fuel, energy, and other critical supplies for our citizens. We are fully prepared to handle emerging challenges,” Puri stated.

What Triggered Lockdown Rumours?
The panic on social media erupted after PM Modi called for "COVID-like preparedness", while mentioning economic fallout of the growing tensions in West Asia. While the prime minister didn’t mention “lockdown”, his words were misinterpreted by people.
The speculation of whether lockdown would be implemented again arose from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East that has disrupted global supplies including energy and essential commodities. The panic was further intensified by the sixth anniversary of the COVID lockdown on March 24.
