Mahaparinirvan Diwas Holiday: The Maharashtra government announced a local holiday on Friday due to observed the death anniversary of Bharat Ratna BR Ambedkar. The day is widely known as Mahaparinirvan Diwas across the country.
This is the third such local holiday given by the government after Dahi Handi and Ganesh Visarjan. It is expected that people in large number will come to pay homage of Babasaheb on his 68th death anniversary at Chaityabhoomi, where Ambedkar was cremated. It is located at Shivaji Park.
Besides Maharashtra, the Punjab government has also announced a public holiday to mark the martyrdom of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.
On Thursday, Maharashtra deputy CM Eknath Shinde paid homage by garlanding Ambedkar's statue in Thane's Court Naka area. Amid Mahaparnirvan Diwas holiday, here's a list of what's closed and what's open in the state.
- The state and semi-government offices in Mumbai and its suburbs will remain shut.
- The public and private banks will operate as usual because the Reserve Bank of India's holiday calendar does not list December 6 as holiday.
- All the schools in Mumbai will be closed, according to a notice from the Education Department's Cluster Resource Center (CRC).
- According to Hindustan Times, a letter from the deputy director of education has informed that all the schools and junior colleges in Mumbai will remain shut on December 6 in honour of Babasaheb Ambedkar's Mahaparinirvan Diwas.
