Manipur Police commandos, who were sent as reinforcement after a cop was shot dead by tribal militants in Moreh, were ambushed by insurgents on their war, NDTV reported police sources as saying.
Many commandos have reportedly been injured in the attack. The team was ensnared between Sinam and Saibol, 10 km short of Tengnoupal district.
Government sources revealed troops of Assam Rifles were rushed to the ambush site to rescue the Manipur police commandos.
A senior Manipur Police officer was killed by suspected insurgents this morning while he was reviewing the construction of a helipad in Moreh, a trading town on the border with Myanmar.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh dubbed the incident a ‘cold-blooded killing’ and vowed that the perpetrators will be brought to justice. “Deeply saddened by the cold-blooded killing of SDPO Chingtham Anand, OC Moreh Police this morning. His dedication to serve and protect the people will always be remembered. The perpetrators will be brought to justice," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
