Manipur Violence: A 28-year-old Meitei man, was shot dead at point-blank range by insurgents in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, about 65 km from Imphal, after being shown pleading for his life with folded hands in a video released by the group.

The night-time footage, which has no sound, shows the victim on his knees as the insurgents open fire with an AK-series assault rifle. The killing was accompanied by a text overlay stating "no peace, no popular government". The man has been identified as Mayanglambam Rishikanta Singh, and his wife, C Haokip, belongs to the Kuki community.

Mayanglambam Rishikanta Singh was employed in Nepal. He was on leave and had come to meet his wife, who had taken permission for the safrom the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and its Tuibong district headquarters, sources cited by NDTV said.

KNO Responds

"It is hereby categorically clarified that neither did the organisation have any knowledge of the visit of Mayanglambam nor was it involved in the incident. The organisation further clarifies that under no circumstances is any spouse of our people from any other community ever subjected to such activity," the KNO said on Thursday morning, as quoted by NDTV.

At least 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in the ethnic violence between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and hills-based Kuki-Zo groups in Manipur since May 2023. The state has been under President's Rule since February last year.

Earlier, a Kuki woman from Manipur died from illness allegedly linked to the trauma she suffered after being gang-raped during the early phase of the ethnic violence in the state in 2023.

The Kuki organisations based in Manipur's Churachandpur and Delhi claimed that she was kidnapped in Imphal and gang-raped in May 2023. She, however, escaped from the kidnappers, but never fully recovered from the shock and injuries and died on January 10 while undergoing treatment in Guwahati.
