A 54-year-old Manipuri musician died on Monday after being allegedly assaulted by a group of delivery workers and dhaba staff when he objected to their shouting and drinking alcohol outside his residence in Delhi's Kilokari village.
What Happened?
C Vikram Singh, a member of the Meitei community who had been living in Kilokari village for several years, went downstairs after hearing a group drinking and creating a disturbance outside his home. When he asked them to lower their noise, the men turned aggressive and attacked him, raining blows and punches on him, news agency PTI reported.
Singh's son, Yaiphaba, rushed him to Holy Family Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Speaking to news agency ANI, a relative of the deceased said, "He was assaulted so brutally that he was left unable to move... Doctors stated his condition was extremely critical. After six CPR attempts, he showed a slight sign of breathing, but his circulation and heart function steadily deteriorated... We want freedom from such brutal assaults and racism."
Police Action
Upon receiving a PCR call regarding the incident, the Sunlight Colony police station initiated an investigation into the circumstances leading to the assault and Singh's death. Police subsequently arrested seven men and apprehended one juvenile, all of whom work at local dhabas and food stalls. An investigation is underway.
Students' Body Demands Justice
The North East Students Society, Delhi University (NESSDU) condoled Singh's death, describing him as a "respected Manipuri musician".
"According to reports, Singh went downstairs from his residence in Kilokri, New Delhi, after a group of six men were allegedly drinking and creating a disturbance outside his apartment. When he requested them to lower the noise, he was reportedly attacked by the group and sustained severe injuries, to which he later succumbed," the students' body said.
Condemning the incident as a "senseless act of violence," NESSDU urged authorities to conduct a "swift, fair, and thorough investigation" to ensure all those responsible are held accountable.
N Biren Singh Urges Swift Action
Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed grief over Singh's death and urged Delhi Police to take swift action.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, "Deeply saddened by the tragic passing of renowned Manipuri guitarist and Western music pioneer, Shri Chongtham Vikram Singh, and deeply concerned by the incident in which he was allegedly assaulted near his residence in southeast Delhi. "
"Shri Vikram Singh’s invaluable contribution to music will always be remembered. His untimely passing is a great loss to his family, the music fraternity, and the people of Manipur. With evidence now emerging in connection with the incident, I urge the Delhi Police to take swift and appropriate action, thoroughly investigate the matter, and ensure that justice is delivered at the earliest," he added.
Offering condolences to Singh's family, he said, "May his soul rest in peace, and may his loved ones find strength and solace during this difficult time."
