Tamil Nadu News: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced the formation of a high-level committee led by retired Supreme Court Chief Justice Kurien Joseph. The committee's main objective is to explore ways to strengthen state autonomy and safeguard the rights of state governments, while also improving relations with the central government.

One of the committee's key responsibilities will be to suggest strategies for reclaiming state subjects that have been moved to the concurrent list. This involves restoring areas of governance that were previously managed solely by state governments but are now overseen jointly with the central government.

The committee is tasked with reviewing existing laws to ensure they do not undermine the integrity of India's federal structure. An interim report is expected by January 2026, with a comprehensive final report due two years later.

This initiative comes amid heightened tensions between Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK and the BJP-led central government, particularly regarding educational policies. The state is advocating for an exemption from the NEET exam for medical admissions, and the three-language policy in the National Education Policy has sparked controversy over perceived "Hindi imposition."

Addressing the Assembly today, Stalin said, "We have lost many students due to the NEET exam. We have continuously opposed the NEET exam. In the name of the triple language policy, the Union Government is trying to impose Hindi in Tamil Nadu. Since we have denied NEP, the Union Government has not released Rs 2,500 crore to the State. In such a situation, education must be brought under the State list."
