UPA vs NDA Govt: A 'White Paper' comparing the economic performance of the BJP-led NDA administration with the Congress-led UPA government's 10 years likely to be introduced in Lok Sabha on Thursday. The White Paper will highlight the country's "poor economic condition" during the UPA tenure and how the Modi government improved the economy, said BJP's Jayant Sinha, chairman of the parliamentary finance committee.
Sinha, who was also the Minister of State (MoS) for Finance in the BJP-led Centre in 2014, said that it took a lot of effort for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to revive Indian economic growth. "We (BJP-led Central government in 2014) had received the economy in a decrepit condition. Inflation was at its peak. We had to improve all of these. Today it is satisfying that due to the able and bold leadership of PM Modi and the constant efforts he made, we are not a Fragile Five but a Top Five economy. The Indian economy has become a shining star globally," he said as quoted by news agency ANI.
Earlier, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman while tabling the Interim Budget, announced that the Government will lay a White Paper on the table of the House "to look at where we were then till 2014 and where we are now, only for the purpose of drawing lessons from the mismanagement of those years".
What Is White Paper
A White Paper is a document released by the government that highlights new policies and accomplishments to garner support and determine how the public will respond. It is often bound in white cover. There are three types of white paper; Economic White Paper, Budget White Paper, and Policy White Paper. Governments usually bring a white paper on a particular subject to discuss issues, suggest action, or draw a conclusion.
Why Modi Govt Is Bringing It
The Centre is bringing a White Paper this Budget session to shed light on how the Modi government revived the economy that was left in poor condition in 2014 by the Congress-led UPA government. "In the white paper, we will clarify what was the position of the economy before 2014...and how we have tackled the economic problems," Sinha said. He claimed that India was among the 'fragile five' economies in 2013.
The current Parliamentary Budget Session has been extended by a day till Saturday, February 10. Earlier it was to be concluded on February 9. The last session before the Lok Sabha polls was started with an address by President Droupadi Murmu on January 31.
