India Monsoon: Monsoon has maintained a sluggish pace across India with heavy rains in eastern and northeastern regions while severe heat waves continue to batter some areas of northwest, worsening the situation. Monsoon is now expected to advance into the remaining parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar in the next few days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD forecasts torrential rains in some areas of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya, raising the risk of flooding and landslides in low-lying areas. Heavy rain alerts have also been issued for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
What’s Behind Uneven Rain Distribution
Role Of Dry Air
At present, dry continental air prevails in central India. However, monsoon needs air that is loaded with moisture as it flows on moist wind known as the low-level jet. Currently, the dry air pocket is preventing the winds coming from the sea to form clouds. This slows down the monsoon progression.

Role Of Western Disturbance
A Western Disturbance developing over the Mediterranean Sea moves towards east over North India. This disturbance is active over northwest India, as per IMD. This attracts moisture and pulls it away towards mountains, leaving the central plain devoid of moisture.
El Nino Conditions
El Niño happens when sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean become unusually warm. This alters wind patterns and disrupts rainfall systems around the world. It often brings lower rainfall to some regions, including India during the monsoon season, while causing heavy rain and flooding in other parts of the world.

Meanwhile, rain and thunderstorms are hit Najafgarh, Dwarka, Palam, IGI Airport, Jafarpur, Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj, and Ayanagar in Delhi on Monday. An alert has also been issued for light rain and strong winds in Gurugram, Manesar, Faridabad, Ballabhgarh, Bahadurgarh, Gohana, Gannaur, and Sonipat.
