Muharram 2025: Muharram, a month of religious mourning for Muslims across the world, started on June 27, and Ashura will be observed in India on either July 6 or 7 this year, based on the sighting of the moon. Currently, July 6 is marked as the tentative date.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and holds deep significance, especially for Shia Muslims. It is one of the four religiously important months in the Islamic calendar.

The 10th day of this month is called Ashura, a day of mourning when Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, was martyred in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The day is marked by processions, prayers and gatherings to remember his sacrifice.

Muharram 2025: Banks, schools closed

On Muharram, several institutions will observe a holiday. All the government institutions, like offices, schools, colleges, both central and state, will remain closed on Muharram.

The states with significant Muslim populations are likely to issue a notification in this regard. Banks across India, including both public and private, will remain closed on Muharram. The citizens are advised to complete all important work before that. However, the services of the internet, mobile banking, and ATMs will remain working on Muharram.

Apart from banks and schools, major stock exchanges - the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) - will remain closed. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also remain shut for the morning session. However, it is expected to resume trading in the evening from 5:00 PM to 11:30/11:55 PM.
