Covid In India: India is witnessing a rise in Covid-19 infections in several major cities, even as the country’s overall case numbers remain low. This increase comes amid a fresh wave of infections spreading across parts of Asia, including Hong Kong and Singapore. Cities like Mumbai, Chennai and Ahmedabad have reported more positive cases, signalling a need for caution.

Mumbai Covid Cases

In Mumbai alone, the number of new Covid-19 cases in May has reached 95, which is a sharp increase given that Maharashtra has recorded just 106 cases since the start of the year. Health officials say around 16 patients are currently receiving treatment in hospitals, with some transferred from KEM Hospital to Seven Hills Hospital to reduce the risk of further spread. The state government has ordered testing for Covid-19 among all patients showing flu-like or severe respiratory symptoms.

Pune Covid Cases

Meanwhile, Pune has no active Covid-19 patients in public hospitals but continues to maintain readiness by keeping 50 beds reserved at Naidu Hospital. Dr Nina Borade, Pune’s health chief, said only one patient was admitted in May, who has since recovered fully. Testing in civic hospitals has been paused as the city waits for updated guidelines from the central government.

Tamil Nadu Covid Cases

Tamil Nadu is also seeing a rise in cases, particularly in Puducherry where 12 new infections were reported. In Chennai, doctors have noticed an increase in Covid-19 among patients initially diagnosed with the flu. Due to the infection risk, some hospitals have postponed important surgeries such as organ transplants and heart operations. Infectious disease expert Dr Subramaniam Swaminathan said Covid-19 is now making up a larger proportion of viral infections than influenza.

Ahmedabad, Karnataka Covid Cases

Karnataka currently has 16 active Covid-19 cases, confirmed by state health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. Ahmedabad in Gujarat reported seven new cases in a single day, a notable rise compared to its usual low case numbers. Those infected are isolating at home, with samples sent for further testing.

Though the World Health Organization declared the pandemic over last year, the virus continues to circulate globally. In India, most recent cases have been mild with no serious complications or deaths. Health experts advise vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women and those with health issues to continue basic safety measures like mask-wearing indoors and frequent hand washing. They also recommend influenza vaccination to protect against possible co-infections.
