Police have detained a 40-year-old female teacher of a prominent Mumbai school for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old. The woman has been arrested under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and the Indian Penal Code.
The accused, who taught English at an esteemed school in Mumbai, is married and has children with her husband. According to her, she got attracted towards the boy when they met multiple times to prepare a dance group for the annual function of the school in December 2023, police said. The incident surfaced after the teen informed his family about the sexual assault, leading to a police complaint by the family.
The accused also took the student to several five-star hotels, making him consume alcohol, ToI reported.
Teacher's Friend Said Relationship With Older Woman 'Quite Common'
The teacher took the help of her female friend, who is not from the school, after the student started avoiding her, NDTV reported, quoting a police official as a source, who preferred to remain anonymous. The accused's friend, who has also been charged, reached out to the teen and reportedly told him that affairs between older women and teenage boys have "become quite common".
The student decided to meet the teacher after her friend successfully convinced the minor that he and the teacher were made for each other.
The boy later developed severe anxiety, and the teacher allegedly gave him anti-anxiety pills, HT reported, citing a police official.
Police said the incident came to light when the student’s family noticed a behaviour change and confronted him. The family had decided not to report the case to police as the teen was about to graduate from the school and was hoping that the teacher would eventually stop bothering him.
The family decided to report the case after the teacher contacted the student through domestic help.
Teacher Charged With POCSO, Juvenile Act, And IPC Section
According to police, the case under sections 4 (penetrative sexual assault), 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) and 17 (abolition of offences) of the POCSO Act has been registered against the woman. She has also been charged with provisions of the IPC and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.
