The central government has also allocated a significant amount of budget for the construction of highways and expressways in the upcoming financial year. While several expressways have generated revenue for the government, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway stands out as the most earning expressway in 2024.

The data revealed that while the total tax collection of all the highways in the country was Rs 580 crore, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway alone generated Rs 163 crore. The extraordinary amount makes it the most profitable expressway of the country, reported Zee News. The expressway had collected Rs 158.4 crore in December 2023.
The expressway was officially opened in 2002 and was built by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), unlike other highways built by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). It got registered in the history book as the country's first six-lane expressway.
The expressway got the limelight as it connects two major cities of Maharashtra—Mumbai and Pune. While Mumbai is regarded as the financial capital of the country, Pune is the educational and IT hub of Maharashtra. The Mumbai-Pune expressway plays a significant role in the lives of residents of these cities, giving a major financial boost to the state.
The expressway generates such high revenue even after being just approximately 94.5 km long, shorter than most of the mega expressways of India. The data revealed that the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway and NH48 together collected Rs 70.7 crore in December 2024, which is lower than the earnings of this expressway.
