Mussoorie Traffic: Tourists visiting Mussoorie on Sunday were stuck in a four-hour-long traffic jam at Gandhi Chowk, leaving them frustrated as vehicles crawled at a very slow pace. The traffic remained disrupted from King Craig to Zero Point, a stretch that often faces congestion due to a long-standing bottleneck at Gandhi Chowk.
The Jagran.com report cited Locals as stating that, this narrow section has been causing jams for over two decades, but no effective action has been taken. Despite Gandhi Chowk falling under National Highway 707A and red markings once placed for road widening, the proposed development was reportedly stalled due to political interference.
The junction is especially prone to gridlock because traffic from four directions merges at this point. It is also a busy route for tourists, adding to the daily traffic pressure. Even the slightest disruption like a stuck bus or tempo traveller—can block movement and lead to long delays.
Residents and regular commuters believe that unless the road between King Craig and Zero Point is widened and the bottleneck at Gandhi Chowk is cleared, traffic issues will continue, especially during tourist seasons.
In separate news, the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway will soon offer direct access to Mussoorie through a proposed 26-km elevated road aimed at bypassing Dehradun’s traffic congestion. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is finalising the Detailed Project Report (DPR). Once built, the road will pass over the Rispana and Bindal rivers, enabling faster travel from Delhi to Mussoorie in just four hours. The project requires land acquisition in 26 localities, including the demolition of over 2,600 houses. With an estimated cost of ₹6,100 crore, affected residents will receive either compensation or alternate land, according to officials quoted by The New Indian Express.
