As the ABVP and the NSUI remain locked in a neck-and-neck battle for the main panel, an independent candidate has stolen the spotlight in the high-stakes DUSU Elections 2026. Deepanshu Shokeen has surged ahead of both major student bodies in the vice presidential contest, building a massive lead of over 12,000 votes.
Shokeen’s lead became noticeable as the vice presidential candidate, with being being the only independent candidate who is leading among the four posts. In the remaining posts of President, Secretary and Joint Secreatary, the ABVP and the NSUI are fighting a close battle.

What Do We Know?
Deepanshu Shokeen, who has emerged as the only independent candidate, making the leading in the DUSU elections, is a student from the Department of Buddhist Studies. Shokeen is a resident of Peera Garhi in West Delhi. His father works as a bus conductor, whereas his mother is an Anganwadi worker.
He graduated from the Bhagat Singh College and has always wished to enter the student politics. However, his father has dreamt his son tbecome a civil servant.
Shokeen has gained attention recently as he raised his voice against the PG collapse in Satya Niketan and vowed to not wear his slippers until justice was served,NDTV reported.
Meanwhile, the leading candidate, has shared a hard-hitting post on X, saying, “it’s done Bro Thank you DU Independent Vice President.” He also thanked students of Delhi University and vowed to stand by their trust in him.

Outspaced By NSUI
Media reports revealed that Shokeen had previously sought candidature from the NSUI, one of the student bodies he is now fighting against in the DUSU Vice President elections.
However, NSUI asked him to withdraw his nomination even before filing one. The student leader refused to do so and instead entered the poll fray as an Independent candidate.
Deepanshu is among the five Vice President candidates in the DUSU elections, others He is fighting against Aranya Singh Rathore, Ishu Maurya, Vir Chatrath and Akshat Shikhar.
