Delhi Building Audit: MCD To Demolish 30 Houses In Pitampura, Residents Fear Overnight Homelessness

Correspondent, Outer Delhi: Amid an extensive operation by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) against unsafe and unauthorised buildings in the capital after the Satya Niketan building collapse claimed the lives of seven people, 38 flats in Pitampura have received notices to vacate.

The MCD notices, issued on Saturday, ordered the residents of several buildings in Pitampura's NP Block to vacate their homes within 48 hours over safety concerns.

The administration has warned of action if they fail to comply. Following the order, people face overnight homelessness, with concerns mounting over finding their next shelter.

Four buildings, unauthorised floors

According to information, the ground floor of these buildings housed a government dispensary until 1988. After that, due to lack of maintenance, the ground floor deteriorated. For safety reasons, several iron jacks had to be installed on the roof. In view of public safety, the administration posted notices on four buildings and ordered the occupants to vacate.

These buildings have eight flats on each floor. In two of these buildings, flats have been illegally constructed on the third and fourth floors, and in the third building, on the third floor. Following the administration's order, the residents of these flats are becoming increasingly concerned.

Hard-earned money at stake along with house

Residents said that they purchased the flats with hard-earned money, which will be lost along with their homes. After the dispensary was closed, no repairs were carried out, and the residents living above are bearing the brunt of the administration's negligence.

Residents questioned the administration, asking, "When these buildings were crumbling from the ground up, who gave permission to build flats on the third and fourth floors? Building above two stories is illegal here, so how did the third and fourth floors get built?"

Rupal, a resident of 130B, Pitampura NP Block, said, "I've been living here for ten years. I have six people in my house. Now, where would I take them in such a short time? The administration ordered the demolition of three other nearby buildings after one building fell into disrepair. This is negligence on the part of the administration officials, and we are suffering the consequences."
