Maharashtra: The Maharashtra government aims to table the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill during the upcoming winter session of the state assembly in Nagpur, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Monday.

Seven-Member Panel Working On Recommendations

Fadnavis said a seven-member panel headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Desai is currently working on recommendations and the government plans to move forward with the implementation process once it receives the committee's report.

"The Maharashtra government has constituted a committee on UCC, and it is working on the matter. We will proceed with implementation as soon as the panel submits its report," news agency PTI quoted Fadnavis as saying.

Fadnavis's announcement comes a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that BJP-led NDA governments in 21 states will implement the UCC before 2029. Shah made the announcement of plans while speaking to the media on Seva Sankalp Abhiyan in Mumbai.

"We introduced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in several states. I am confident that we will implement the UCC in all 21 states governed by the BJP-led NDA before 2029," he said.

He added that the government had strengthened the criminal justice system in the country through the introduction of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, claiming that a 30 per cent increase in the conviction rate has been recorded in several states in a single year.
